Educational visits advisory service

Longtown Outdoor Learning Trust (LOLT) offers an educational visits advisory service to help ensure off-site educational activities are executed safely.

Subscribing to the advisory service will allow you access to:

  • Mike Fawcett, from Longtown Outdoor Learning Trustspecific expert advice concerning Educational Visits from Mike Fawcett, Head of Longtown Outdoor Learning Trust and registered member of the national Outdoor Education Advisers Panel (OEAP).

Mike is a qualified teacher whose most recent school-based post was as Deputy Head Teacher and Educational Visits Co-ordinator of Cross Ash Primary School in Monmouthshire. He is also qualified to lead, instruct and coach a range of Outdoor activities and is an Accredited Practitioner of the Institute for Outdoor Learning. Mike has substantial experience of residential education and is a member of the Association of Heads of Outdoor Education Centres. Mike will also be continuing to advise Northamptonshire County Council about safety issues surrounding Outdoor Learning and on the implementation of its Learning Outside the Classroom policy.
  • nationally approved training courses for Educational Visit Co-ordinators in each school. This course can be delivered as a closed course on school sites if required.
  • nationally approved Visit Leader training courses. This course has a practical module that can be delivered in the school’s local environment to develop staff confidence and skills with the aim of enhancing a school’s curriculum for Learning Outside the Classroom.
  • the eVisit web based system for Educational Visit planning linked to OEAP National Guidance. This system will enable the school to run its own system for the planning and approval of Category A and B visits, whilst Category C visits can be reviewed and approved by Mike Fawcett.
  • the Visit Emergencies Support Network (VESN). This new offer comprises 5 experienced members of OEAP who provide support to schools in neighbouring counties in the Midlands. If a critical incident occurs and Mike Fawcett is not available to provide advice and support then schools may contact any of the other VESN advisers. Access to the VESN enhances the capacity, expertise and resilience of schools.
